A smoke alarm that emits a random chirp indicates one of two things.  The alarms battery may need to be replaced with a new battery or the alarm may have an internal problem and need to be replaced.

4. How often should I test my smoke alarm?

Smoke alarms should be tested once a month.  Press the test button and hold it until you hear a beep.  If you do not hear a beep try changing the battery.  If the smoke alarm is still not functioning properly replace the smoke alarm with a new one or contact the fire department.

5. How often should I change the batteries in my smoke alarm?

Smoke alarm batteries should be changed with new batteries at least once a year.  However, twice a year is recommended.  An easy way to remember this is during time change in the Spring and Fall.
